Stanmore Choral Society is a very friendly choir whose repertoire is based on the western classical choral tradition. However, in the summer we tend to let our hair down a bit and attempt works from the opera, light opera, musical and jazz genres. You can see the concert programme for the coming season here.
If you are interested in singing for fun, you can just come along to one of our Monday evening rehearsals. You will be made very welcome and it is easy to make friends in the choir.
We welcome new singers of all abilities in each of the parts – soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Our members come from Stanmore, Harrow, Kenton, Pinner, Ruislip, Watford, Bushey, Barnet, Edgware, Burnt Oak, Colindale, Wembley and Mill Hill.
The rehearsals are always enjoyable and although musical director Nick Austin constantly seeks to get the best from singers, he ensures that there is plenty of fun as well. There is no formal audition but after about four weeks Nick will listen to new members to see how they are doing and to be sure that they are singing in the correct voice part. One of our members produces free practice CDs to use at home, which many members find invaluable. He also runs a free site with a range of ‘sight and sound’ rehearsal videos – you can check them out here.
Rehearsals are on Monday evenings from 7.45pm to 9.45pm at the church hall of St William of York, Du Cros Drive, Stanmore, HA7 4TJ.
The annual subscription for members is £150, which can be paid in monthly or termly installments. Music loan is usually included, though sometimes members are asked to buy their own copy. The choir operates a small bursary scheme to enable students and others of limited means to participate in the choir’s singing activities in line with its charitable purposes.
Student bursaries are principally for younger singers (there is no formal age limit but usually recipients are under 25) who have some singing experience e.g. have sung in a school or church choir or have had singing lessons, and now want to gain experience singing in an adult choir.
Senior bursaries are open to people of any age who would be prevented from joining the choir for financial reasons. Senior bursaries are awarded annually and may be renewed indefinitely.
If you would like to know more about joining the choir, or about the bursaries scheme, either telephone Mo Dunning on 020 8909 1838, or email firstname.lastname@example.org or fill in the form below. We look forward to hearing from you.
